One Foot in the Past
Written By: Nikki Wright

Author's Notes: This fic was created in the midst of a website-based mental breakdown I wrote this story to gain a new perspective with The Simpsons which is considerably dark and dramatic. It involves one of the great loves of my (time travel) which at the time was finding it's way into all artwork and ideas I would do. The view I had when writing this faded away shortly after finishing as it was just too dark. This story is loosely based on an old episode of the Outer Limits in which a man goes back in time to stop something awful from happening to himself.

Chapter III - Future Two

<July 23, 2042 - Department of Justice>

Stacks of papers and documents in the office begin to dissapear and change. A folder containing a photo of Dr. Lisa Simpson changes into ballistics reports.

WARREN: Al, you ever hear of a physisist named Simpson? Dr. Lisa Simpson?
ALLISON: ...No, can't say that I have.
WARREN: Hmm... well we might have a lead. I'll take a trip down to ballistics, care to join me?
ALLISON: Yeah. I could use a little range work, actually.
WARREN: All right. Loser buys lunch.

<Ballistics Shooting Gallery>

ALLISON and WARREN practice thier shooting in a hostage-scenario on paper targets. They finish the session and await the results.

WARREN: Beat that.
ALLISON: Patience.

ALLISON's target arrives, all the shots are grouped on the attacker's head.

WARREN: Well that's a hell of a grouping, Taylor. Anyone special in mind?
ALLISON: Don't push it, Warren.
WARREN: Hey, it's not my fault you keep choosing losers to go out with.
ALLISON: Why are we down here again?
WARREN: ...I mean I'm sure it's great when they say they love you... but doesn't it suck when they're never around to show it?
ALLISON: Yeah. Can you spell psychobabble... ow.

ALLISON agitates the cut on her hand as she is reloading her gun.

WARREN: How'd you do that?
ALLISON: If you're my friend you would but the hell out.

Another agent enters the shooting gallery with paperwork.

AGENT: Sorry to hold you guys up. I ran these again like you asked, just to make sure I wasn't seeing things.

The agent hands a report to ALLISON.

AGENT: That bullet was taken from the body of a groundskeeper, Willie McDeere, 15 years ago. Gun needs cleaning but judging from the autopsy reports... it worked just fine.
ALLISON: And this other one?
AGENT: Just got some security files released from Washington. This shell was taken from a 9 millimeter Smith & Weson issued to an N.S.A. consultant in 2038, one Dr. Simpson.
ALLISON: 2038, why are we just getting the ballistics reports now?
AGENT: Well the files were just de-classified a month ago. Some senate subcommittee pulled the plug on her project.
ALLISON: You're telling me this Dr. Simpson is our Mr. 9 millimeter?
WARREN: No. No, no, no. It gets weirder. That's why I had him run the ballistics again. The gun issued to Dr. Simpson was manufactured in 2034... but the first of the killings took place in 2000, 34 years before the gun was even constructed. Not to mention the fact Dr. Simpson wasn't born yet.
ALLISON: ...*sigh* Somebody... somebody screwed up the records.
WARREN: I told you it gets weirder.

<Department of Justice>

Various agents and staff are sitting around a card table playing poker and watching tv.

TV BROADCAST: It's a few minutes before midnight. I'm standing in the prison cell that up until an hour ago housed serial killer Wendell Thompson.
TIRED AGENT: Come on, get on with it! I wanna go home!
TV BROADCAST: Thompson shall die just a few minutes from now. His reign of terror which cost at least 13 lives -- was stopped by the F.B.I. two years ago due largely to the efforts of this woman, special agent Allison Taylor.

The staff all cheer and congratulate ALLISON, who doesn't turn to look at the screen or smile.

TV BROADCAST: ...Who against the authority of her superiours took over the investigation when Thompson brutally murdered her close friend, Alex Whitney. Thompson has rejected all appeals, in effect, begging the state to execute him. Just this morning Thompson told his lawyers quote... "I just want to die." A film clip of the last interview given to this reporter just yesterday in this very cell, a monster? Almost certainly. But, also... a sad, sick human being.

The scene changes to DR. LISA SIMPSON's office where LISA is watching the very same report on tv.

KENT BROCKMAN JR: (From Previous Interview) When did you kill your first victim?
WENDELL THOMPSON: That was the... day after my 21st birthday. Yeah, I threw a big party at my house. I invited everyone from work, and nobody came. The next day, I went to the park for lunch, near my house. I sat there eating lunch, and... wondering why didn't anyone come to my party?
KENT BROCKMAN JR: That first victim was Greta Wolfcastle. Why did you choose her?
WENDELL THOMPSON: She was the most popular girl I knew... she told me she'd come. She said it in front of everyone. You know, to her, I think I was nothing but a joke.

The scene changes back to the Department of Justice where no everyone is quietly watching the interview including ALLISON.

WENDELL: I wanted... I wanted them to remember me, not her... now they do. Heh, heh.

The recording of yesterday's interview ends.

KENT BROCKMAN JR: Wendell Thompson, who left his victims dead and dismembered, so people would remember the monster that killed them. 13 victims murdered, starting with Greta Wolfcastle... and ending with Alex Whitney. All dead to feed the ego of a damaged boy who never finished growing up, and who has run out of time.
AGENT: As long as we don't run out of juice.
ALLISON: Shut up.
AGENT: Come on, Allison. It's just a joke.
KENT BROCKMAN JR: I have just recieved the news that at one minute after 12:00, Wendell Thompson was pronounced dead...

All the agents and staff cheer obnoxiously.

ALLISON: What the hell is the matter with you guys?

ALLISON gets up and leaves the room. All the staff go silent and turns thier eyes to the table.

AGENT: ...What's with her?
WARREN: Hey, don't even start. She's earned the right.

WARREN then gets up and follows ALLISON out.

AGENT: ...Mr. Sensitivity.

<DR. LISA SIMPSON's Office>

LISA turns off her tv and sits tightly thinking for a moment, she then gets up and walks over to the keypad-locked door and holds her head. She then lowers her arms and leaves her office.

<Department of Justice hallway>

WARREN is walking down the hallway and sees ALLISON standing next to a wall with her eyes on the floor. WARREN puts his hand on her back.

WARREN: Hey, you all right?
ALLISON: (Wiping away tears) Yeah, yeah... um, I got Thompson, you know? I mean I got him. And what he did was unspeakable, and I just... I thought that I would feel, um...
WARREN: I know.
ALLISON: I just didn't expect to feel this way.
WARREN: You still miss her, Allison.

WARREN then hugs ALLISON

<DR. LISA SIMPSON's Office>

LISA enters her office the next morning with a newspaper. She closes the blinds on her door and locks it. She then glances at the headline on the paper and tosses it on her desk. The headline reads "Thompson Executed"

She then inputs her password on the keypad-locked door and enters. Inside is various computer equipment and circuitry and a large oval-shaped metallic structure connected to a cyrogenic storage tank and computer module.

LISA types various lines of code into the command console and inputs a destination time and location of Springfield City Park in the year 2016. A message appears on the screen which says CYBERNETIC LOOP ACTIVATED. Lisa then picks up her handgun and stands in front of the large oval structure which starts to glow and project a vortex-like display. She enters the portal and vanishes.

<February 16, 2016 - Springfield City Park>

A younger WENDELL THOMPSON is sitting on a bench by a pond feeding ducks breadcrumbs. A gust of wind then starts and causes Wendell to turn his head and see a large orange portal appearing.

LISA SIMPSON then steps out of the portal and checks where she is. Wendell looks at the scene with a gaping mouth and a look of disbelief. Lisa then starts to approach him.

LISA: Are you Wendell Thompson?
WENDELL: What are you?
LISA: Are you Wendell Thompson?!
WENDELL: Yes, that's my name. What is this?
LISA: You're thinking about Greta Wolfcastle, aren't you?
WENDELL: H-how did you know that?
LISA: You said so in an interview.
WENDELL: What?
LISA: Oh, the day after your birthday, you came to the park for lunch and you sat on a bench, thinking about killing Greta Wolfcastle. And later that same day, today, you did.
WENDELL: *laughs* This isn't happening.
LISA: On July 25th, 2042, after a murder spree lasting 26 years, claiming 13 victims, you were executed at a state penitentiary.
WENDELL: Executed?
LISA: Yes, you were glad to die.
WENDELL: My god.
LISA: And I'm here to carry out that just and legal sentance.

LISA raises her gun and aims it at WENDELL.

WENDELL: No! Wait!

LISA fires two shots into WENDELL's chest which knocks him to the ground. The ducks in the pond all make noise and fly away.

LISA then walks over to WENDELL who is still alive, and bleeding from his chest and mouth.

WENDELL: *sobs* I haven't done anything.

LISA fires a final shot into his forehead. She then conceals her gun and pulls out the small black device to activate the portal. She steps into it and vanishes leaving WENDELL THOMPSON dead with 3 gunshot wounds.

<July 26, 2042 - DR. LISA SIMPSON's Office>

LISA emerges from the locked room with a bloody nose and sickly complexion. She sits down at her desk and holds her head in pain in front of a newspaper which reads "Krusty To Host 80th Annivarsary Show"
