One Foot in the Past
Written By: Nikki Wright

Author's Notes: This fic was created in the midst of a website-based mental breakdown I wrote this story to gain a new perspective with The Simpsons which is considerably dark and dramatic. It involves one of the great loves of my (time travel) which at the time was finding it's way into all artwork and ideas I would do. The view I had when writing this faded away shortly after finishing as it was just too dark. This story is loosely based on an old episode of the Outer Limits in which a man goes back in time to stop something awful from happening to himself.

Chapter IV: String Of Pearls

<Department of Justice>

A photo of WENDELL THOMPSON's corpse appears on the corkboard "victim" gallery along with 17 others.

WARREN: Those ballistic reports on Simpson were really bugging me, so I did a little digging into her background, looking through her psych record to see if there's anything that could possibly connect her to these men.
ALLISON: And?
WARREN: Well about 20 years ago Lisa Simpson was kidnapped... for five days, some scumbag held her, raped her in the basement, nearly beat her half to death. She finally escaped but she spent the next year in a hospital.
ALLISON: Oh, god... ok, we should see if she still has that gun.
WARREN: Well, wait. The interesting thing here is 6 out of 18 of Mr. 9 Milimeter's targets have been arrested at least once as sex offenders.
ALLISON: Sex offender... victim of a sex crime.
WARREN: Exactly.
ALLISON: All right, a gun... maybe her's... kills both before and after she recieves it. Is she still at Springfield A&M?
WARREN: Secretary says she's in today. Lotsa luck.
ALLISON: Yeah, never a dull moment.

WARREN leavs the room and goes into the hallway and sees ALEX WHITNEY walking in his direction.

WARREN: Hey, Alex. What are you doing here?
ALEX: Oh, I came by to see Allison.
WARREN: Oh. She's at her desk.
ALEX: So... is anything happening between you two yet?
WARREN: Uhh... nnnno.
ALEX: *sigh* Don't tell me you haven't asked her out yet.
WARREN: Well, you know... with work and stuff.
ALEX: Come on, she talks about you all the time.
WARREN: Really?
ALEX: Mm-hmm.
WARREN: All right. Ok. Maybe I will.

ALEX then enters the office and walks over to ALLISON.

ALEX: Hey, Ally.
ALLISON: Alex! Gosh! How are you?

The two hug.

ALLISON: Now what brings you to this drab place?
ALEX: Well, I came by to see if you were free for lunch.
ALLISON: Oh, I'm sorry, I can't.
ALEX: Let me guess. El Jerko?
ALLISON: Uh... no, no. Um, actually, no. Nelson and I are kind of going through this odd thing right now and I'm not quite sure where it is, but I don't think it's too good.
ALEX: You know, I have no idea why you're with him in the first place. You could be seeing someone else, like Warren.
ALLISON: Uh, uh I'm sorry... Warren...
ALEX: Sure. Why not?
ALLISON: This Warren here?
ALEX: Yeah, you could treat yourself to a nice guy for a change.
ALLISON: Oh, that would be a novel idea.
ALEX: Oh, come on, let me take you for lunch.
ALLISON: Oh, Alex, I can't. I really, really can't. I'm sorry... but there's always tommorow.
ALEX: *sigh* Yeah, tommorow.
ALLISON: Yes, tommorow.

ALLISON hugs ALEX good-bye.

ALLISON: I'll see you later.
ALEX: ...Tommorow.
ALLISON: Tommorow! I promise!

ALLISON turns around.

ALLISON: (To herself) Warren... hmm.

<DR. LISA SIMPSON's Office, Locked Room>

LISA is busy reading graphs and charts and calbrating equipment. She holds a tissue to her bleeding nose.

She turns around and sees ALLISON at the door which she left open.

ALLISON: Dr. Simpson?
LISA: My, we are persistent.
ALLISON: I'm sorry, have we...
LISA: ...Met before? Yes... *sigh* but you shouldn't remember. What am I going to do with you?
ALLISON: I'm sorry. I just came here because I...
LISA: Because someone's computer spit out my name in some manner that doesn't make any sense at all.
ALLISON: I'm afraid I have no idea what's going on.
LISA: Only one of us has to. You're very intelligent, perceptive, persistent. That must be how you caught Wendell Thompson.
ALLISON: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Back up a minute.

LISA's nose begins bleeding again, she holds a tissue to it.

LISA: *gasps* I am so tired... of trying to... fix things. *sigh* It was only a matter of time before you founds me anyway.
ALLISON: What are you talking about?
LISA: Work with me, Allison Taylor!
ALLISON: How the hell did you know my name?
LISA: That doesn't matter! What matters, and what you want to know is whether I killed those men. Well, I did. I killed all 20 monsters, and because I did, 83 women are still alive.
ALLISON: You couldn't have. You were only 5 years old.

LISA guides ALLISON over to the large oval device

LISA: Time travel. A means by which to stop crime before it starts.
ALLISON: This is a really sick joke.
LISA: A fetus' pre-temporal lobe can regulate and energy field. That field becomes a doorway to the past. Look within yourself, something has changed. Can't you feel it?
ALLISON: Feel what, Dr. Simpson?
LISA: *sigh* You know why the N.S.A. was so interested in me? Because I could have made my time machine work even then but I didn't want them to have it. Not before I had set things right. Days are like pearls, a string of pearls. Each pearl, an event. The past seems imutable, solid, but go back in time and you change one event, and you liquefy every pearl that follows you change the entire string.
ALLISON: I don't know what you're talking about, but I think I should advise you of your rights.
LISA: But there is only one problem... the time traveler remembers not only the changed time line, but the original one as well. Every time I use the technique, another universe of possibilities slams into my head, and my brain can't handle it anymore. I think I hemorrhaged the last time. I don't know how much longer I have to live. But you are young, and strong. You could carry on for me.
ALLISON: ...You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say...
LISA: I know all that, for god's sake! Don't be so common! Can't you fathom what it is like to have your whole life driven by something that is beyond your control, something that you cannot go back and change?!
ALLISON: Dr. Simpson, are you talking about what happened to you where you were a child?

LISA looks ALLISON in the eyes then walks over to her command console and begins inputing a new sequence.

LISA: I have not been able to face him yet. It's because I am afraid. Afraid of change. I don't know what my life would be like if he were dead. I kept putting it off, and putting it off... but now I am out of time.

LISA then walks over to a utility box and removes a small black device and a handgun. ALLISON then draws her gun and points it at Lisa.

LISA: It's tearing me apart.
ALLISON: Put that weapon down. Dr. Simpson, I highly suggest you put that weapon down.

LISA activates the machine causing a gust of wind to fill the room.

ALLISON: Even if there were possible, why would anyone do such a thing?
LISA: An opporatunity to kill the killers before they can kill. What the hell could be wrong with that?!
ALLISON: Bu-but you are talking about killing innocent men. They haven't done anything.
LISA: They would've! You of all people should understand.
ALLISON: What the hell have I got to do with any of this?!
LISA: In another time, you and I had much more in common.
ALLISON: Dr. Simpson, you need help.
LISA: I'm sorry you feel that way.

LISA then steps into the portal and dissapears. ALLISON then appraoches the portal and sticks her hand into it.

<June 14, 2015 - Dark Industrial Basement>

A ONE-ARMED MAN is holding a TEENAGE GIRL and hauling her down a set of stairs. The GIRL screams and trys to escape but is unable.

In another part of the basement a large portal appears.

The ONE-ARMED MAN brings the GIRL to a matress in the middle of the room and throws her to the floor. The MAN then trys to start undressing her.

DR. LISA SIMPSON then emerges from a corner of the room.

LISA: Stop! Leave her alone!
MAN: What is this?
LISA: I dreamed about you for 20 years! I thought you were 10 feet tall. With horns... and fangs.
MAN: I don't know what game you're playin', but you're screwing with the wrong guy, lady.
YOUNG LISA: Help me! *sobs*
LISA: Everything will be all right, darling. (To man) Do you have any idea what you did to me?! You stole my life!

She then raises her gun and points it at the MAN, who in turn then points his gun at the GIRL.

MAN: Now, wait! Now, we'll just calm down! I don't wanna hurt the little girl, she and I are just gonna go for a little walk. I'll keep her company for a little while. Then I'll let her go.
LISA: God, no!

Another portal appears in the room out of sight

MAN: Listen, bitch! I could kill her, right now! So you just stand the hell back!

ALLISON walks up with her gun raised and pointed at the MAN.

ALLISON: Drop it! Put that gun down, Dr. Simpson, put your gun down!
LISA: I can't! I can't let him do it!
ALLISON: You're gonna hit the girl!
MAN: It doesn't matter, if she doesn't I will. Now both of you, you drop your guns! I walk away with the little bitch or she's dead!
LISA: Oh, you're so right! You are so right! Nothing matters! Nothing I ever did helped! Drugs... therapy... killing monsters, like you!
MAN: (fearfully) I... mean it!
LISA: Anything would be better then this pain. All I want is for it to be over.
YOUNG LISA: Don't hurt me! I didn't do anything! *sobs*
LISA: Just close your eyes... Lisa.
YOUNG LISA: Don't let me die!
LISA: No one should outlive their dreams.
MAN: God! Drop your guns! I mean it!

LISA then looks at the younger version of herself and smiles.

LISA: (To Allison) How good are you?
ALLISON: ...The best.
LISA: You'd better be.

LISA then drops her gun.

MAN: Stay away from me. You hear me, you crazy bitch?!
ALLISON: Dr. Simpson, get back!

LISA then approaches the man slowly

LISA: (To her younger self) Everything's gonna be all right.
MAN: You get the hell away from me!

He then shoves the GIRL down and shoots older LISA in the chest. LISA then collapses to the floor. ALLISON then returns fire hitting him right in the forehead.

YOUNG LISA is holding her head screaming. ALLISON runs over to YOUNG LISA to make sure she's ok.

ALLISON: Are you all right? Are you, are you hurt?! You'll be ok.
LISA: (To her younger self) Lisa, Lisa, shh! It's ok. Don't let the past destroy your future.
YOUNG LISA: *sobs* I... I don't understand.
LISA: Oh, sweetie, only one of us has to.

YOUNG LISA then gets to her feet and begins to approach them

LISA: Don't. Don't come near. Tell her to go home. Tell her to go home.

ALLISON then leave's LISA's side and guides YOUNG LISA away.

ALLISON: Just go home, please, just go home, please.

LISA removes the small black device from her waist and hands it to ALLISON.

LISA: You take this. Just turn the knob. *breathing heavilly* You are very good.
ALLISON: I need to get you to a doctor.
LISA: No. You gotta go back before you can't go back.

She pushes ALLISON away.

LISA: Go. Go, go.

ALLISON begins to activate the device but hesitates.

LISA: GOOO!!!

ALLISON turns the knob on the device activating the portal. She then steps through and vanishes.

YOUNG LISA who is hiding behind some shelves is witnessing the whole ordeal.

<July 26, 2042 - DR. LISA SIMPSON's Office, Locked Room>

ALLISON emerges from the portal as everything around her in the office suddenly dissapears and turns into storage boxes.
